And Now... The News

After days of closed door negotiations which brought the league to a standstill, amidst media speculation rife with talk of closure, rebellion and financial mismanagement, this morning the doors of the league office were once again open to the public.  Smiles of greeting and replies such as, "No, there was no talk of closure," were heard in the wood panelled, luxuriously carpeted foyer.  Making himself comfortable in one of the beautifully upholstered leather armchairs was none other than the recently knighted Sir William la Rodentia (his secretary said, "good night").  While Sir William refused to comment on the rumours of sweeping changes in FLATNZ ("Utter rubbish!"), he was quite willing to talk about his team's performance against the Alcoholics last session.  "Pure brilliance," he purred.  Yes, that's right, cat lovers - purred!  The match against the Devils, however, had him spluttering in his drink.  "An outrage," he declared!  "Pure handball!"  When we suggested that goal keepers were permitted to use their hands, he suggested we go and tell Parongia that, since he didn't seem to have figured it out.  Perhaps this was not the time to press Sir William about the final match, since he abruptly got out of his chair and left.  Expert commentators agree, however, that he made a fundamental error in switching to stall against longball while marking with more than 2 players.  Simple statistical analysis shows that he would have been much better to have remained playing ball control despite the subbing of his stars.

KM prepped for beating
By the numbers, GM and SCO are the best two teams in Beta. Best T11s (over 21, while most of us are under 20) and most goals scored (20 each) means that our less-than-stellar GKs had best be up to the task this coming week. I will be thrilled if we keep things close enough to steal a bonus point from those two matches.

Scoring should also be difficult, as GM's Idi Amin leads the league in Goals Against Average. He has played the 6th most minutes of any player in the league and has only let in 3 goals. Then again, in all that time he's only faced 10 shots, so maybe if we can get lucky enough to have 3 or 4 float our way off bad passes we can convert one now that we are up to a whopping three shooters over SL 20. Marauder fans had best not get their hopes too high against the likes of Amin, though some optimism and noise from the crowd would be nice as it's our only home match of the session.

The clash against the Tartan Army of Scotland will likely be over by halftime. While we don't plan on laying down for them (mostly because there's no way we want to see what's up those kilts), it would take McCormack breaking his leg in the opening minutes for us to have a good chance of victory.

And that leaves our bottom dweller clash with TUC as our best hope of points. As they have undoubtedly circled KM as their similar best chance, this should be a good match - in a very relative use of the term "good" as opposed to what we'll see between Alpha teams. With TUC at home, a draw may be the best to hope for as their T11 will likely all be out to welcome us.
Fortunately, the CP and TP go into the team regardless of wins and losses. We'll see if the cash can hold out for the rest of the season to keep even this little moral victory on track.

Just came back from the holidays, had a great time in Asia. In the last session we needed 3 wins to make it to alpha, and we did exactly that. Which means that the team is now really tired, so we dont expect much from the first alpha session, anyway our position in the table is similar to other playoff contenders, so we can start this session relaxed, not too relaxed though. Hmmm, we still have a decent amount of cash, so i havent figured out a spending strategy yet, will do that next week. Anyway the season for us is just starting, and the goal is to reach the playoffs. Thats it for today.

Tough Alpha
For a second season in a row OLY have scraped into Alpha. It's nice playing against the top teams but this is sure gonna be tough. We start off with a trip to the mighty HOB who have threatened to T11, doesn't get more challenging than that.

Then we welcome SAT to Tinfield, not getting an easier. Then away to LSD who we pipped into Alpha last year, they're a lot stronger now.

Oh well let's get some coaching and training done anyway, there's always next season.

Been Busy

Not much time for the e-soccer since mid-season.  I still intend to implement the Team of Week/Season ideas, but it might have to wait until I can get a bit of a breather.  Last week was busy with work hitting the evenings for Julia & I, followed by being away for the weekend with a church thing.  I also received news that my uncle had died.  Number 11 of 12 siblings, and the first to die.  So we packed up the kids and went to the funeral.  Quite a good time, actually, for all its sadness.  Many of us cousins haven't seen each other for 20 years, so there where those delightful moments where you're trying to determine if this person is a friend of the family or a relative whom I should know.  Also quite novel being with a group of people who are like me (and even more so), as those family traits are seen replicated across a bunch of people.  Very glad to have been part of the occassion, and very worth the effort.  Now I seem to be scrambling to get things set up for Easter, not to mention my wife's birthday tomorrow.  Haven't done my lineups yet, but they should get done tomorrow.  If not, well, the league might be able to wait on the commissioner.

Anyway, Alpha, then.  Last session could have been slightly more rewarding of the effort put in.  Have to play one of my matches a bit lean, but otherwise in good form heading in.  The one part of the form we'd like to change is the shot conversion.  We doubled it in the final Conference round, all the way up to 17.5%, but we're still bottom of the heap.

First game back
It should be an easy win shouldn't it? We play the bottom team in Alpha and they have their number one keeper suspended. Thing is at the weekend my MSWL team played the bottom team in the division and I spotted they had an SL 10 GK - easy peasy! 0-0 draw !! So it's T11 I think for the Holy men.

Two little coincidences - both the Holylanders and Stockholm Science Geeks were managed by Yoav Haberman in the past. And at the weekend I was away in Bristol - the original team name of the Old Boys.

Set for Second Half
With the All-Star matches now out of the way, the Marauders withstood the evil aging process and appear to have come out of the fire better off than we went in. Given that a weaker team loses less SL than the powerhouses, we closed the average SL gap a bit even though we still bring up dead last in the league in that category. We are more optimistic about the second half of the year though, as we will now be playing teams far closer to our weak T11 average.

Looks like the schedule maker did us no favors by starting the Beta campaign against MLB, who will undoubtedly throw down the T11 on general principle. That's followed by the eternally crafty Mike H. and the Expos, who always play us tough. And then the ASM tag team host us for the last match, when we will likely be too tired to put up much resistance. All told, I'd be very happy with a draw and close loss out of these three matches.

The best news for KM? After this session is done, we'll have a goalie over SL 20 for the first time in two seasons! There is hope yet for something resembling a defense on this team after all, even if that means that all my UTs take their shots from the behind the midfield circle.

In any case, lineups are already in for KM and I double-checked on the website to be sure they loaded with the "check" button for matches 18-20 (hint, hint for Mr. Given). Now we can sit back and relax for two weeks without having to worry about the deadline moving on us.

Northern All-Stars
So after just 5 games in charge of a bunch of Alcoholics a rookie manager wins the Northern Conference and is handed the reigns of the Northern All-Stars! Now I did consider letting someone else who has a better idea of what they're doing take charge, but as I might not get another shot at it I shall enjoy the priveledge of seeing the Northern men show the Southern boys how to play football - it's 442 Normal! Well for the first game anyway, we'll have to see in a short time whether Steve was bluffing or double-bluffing wth his tactics talk earlier. I've given every player a full game as well. Let them have their chance of glory! Will Jerry Lee Lewis's balls set the Southern net on fire? Let's hope so!

Woof woof woof. Gimme 40k. End of press release... kidding!

I am delighted to make it into the Alpha Conference for the first time. I thought I would miss out after going NMR, but two excellent wins mean that we avoid a second season running in Beta. I guess we were fortunate with the run in as we faced the bottom two teams - Kingsridge and Gibraltar. We won both games 4-0. KM lost thanks to four first half goals and Gib succumbed to four second half strikes.

My top two finish also means that I get the honor of managing one of the All Star teams. I guess I should win my game easily as the North is much better than the South (five teams in Alpha woooo.)

Team is ready. We have the youngest team and the least skilled but we'll see what kind of damage we can do. Even though we have the younger of the HOB GK's we're confident we have the better of the two. Phil Tackle is our favorite player, just because of his name. Tactics wise we stocked up on MPP's so we can play whatever we need to. Let the games begin!

I get better stats playing 4-3-3 N than I do playing 4-2-4 L, Robin. The problem is that you've got some potent players on your squad and if I'm going to mark them, then I might as well play BC. I did enjoy the way I crippled OLY. >:D

Keeping it interesting
KM was on cloud nine. Up 4-0 at halftime against the King of Stall. Surely we could pull this one out?

Nope.
Giving up 5 second-half goals while not managing to score any more ourselves, ODD came storming back for the win. We'll take the 2 points for close loss and 3+ goals, however with that loss our chances of stealing a playoff spot for the Bowl just got very long indeed.

In any case, the match was a lot of fun to read through - which is the point of the games anyway!

Looking forward to the All-Star games. Having two good old UTs and two good young UTs I'm sure the Northern managers won't mind selecting from my lineup this season. I always hated having to pick lower quality players from the bottom team. Can't ever hurt having quality Utility players to move all over though. Hopefully they'll learn something from playing with the league stars and come back ready to dominate Beta in KM fashion of old. Once we get a GK that is.

Until then, see you on the pitch.

Great finish
Very happy with the final two games of Conference play. I thought both games could be tricky, expecting both teams to make a play for Alpha but we beat them both for a maximum 10 points taking captain Steve Turner to SL 36 with 9 PU. He's also improved his save percentage from 50% to 75%. Both ASM and CUB also lost their other game to drop back to Beta, but this could have been the respective manager's wishes.

We increased our lead over the next best team from 2 to 6 points, in effect giving us a free game to rest players.

Cash is low but we are now training and coaching the support players rather than the stars so we shouldn't have any problems.

My cash flow predictions assumed 80k gate money per game and we're currently at 80.76k, with Alpha usually giving us a little more due to the higher morales: only OLY have less than 500 going into Alpha.

Initial impressions
Dang! Knew I should have gone with my instinct and played 4-3-3 N against Robin. As for OLY, we scored from 30% of shots! That's double our average! When it hits 40% I'll be delirious!!

Lake Superior Dragons

While Tim starts to post...
I'll just say I'm not overly comfortable with my chances of Alpha. Taylor suspended and either team could beat me. I balanced my lineup and that could spell disaster with both teams beating me. As much as I liked winning the bowl...I'd rather not have to try to do it again this season!

Alpha or Beta
Big session coming up. OLY have done much better than I expected in conference play so far. This is partly down to our potent strike force (22 goals so far) and partly down to some lucky games where the opposition decided to rest or NMRed. We can't count on that this session that's for sure.

First up OLY welcome Northern leaders AA to Tinfield, some great players from front to back and they'll be looking to get some more points for a nice start in Alpha. Then we travel to WRR who are currently in 3rd and have only scored 8 goals so far, yikes they may find their shooting boots for this one.

For OLY Alpha is certainly not guaranteed. A back of envelope type calculation indicates that 34 points may be required to qualify for Alpha, OLY are on 31 so we need at least one 4 point win I think to qualify. It's going to be exciting, good luck all!

Matches set
Double-checked the orders through the lineup page to make sure they were in. All good. So KM is set to wrap up the conference campaign in dead last. Right where we want to be. No chance at all of setting foot in Alpha. Fooling the Beta campaign into thinking we're a non-threat. Oh, yes. They'll never see us coming. We'll put out some "woe is us" press posts and they'll rest some key starters so as to play hard against the guys they think will be the Bowl favorites. Then we'll slowly creep up the tables to steal 4th place. All you have to do is make the playoffs. Then anything, anything can happen, as we well know from ample past experience. This will be the start of our... huh? Is this thing on? How long have you been standing there? Really?!? Ooooooooookay. Um... hi! Yeah, KM here. We'll be happy to finish is sixth place again. No real expectations for this season. Just getting the team better and making sure we get all our training and coaching done on budget. Yep, nothing to see here. Just going through the motions. OK. Bye now.

MLB spends all season in the promo zone, and now we wake up, log in, and see ourselves in the relegation "B" zone. Oh, well. Shield bad. Bowl good. Willy's still ugly and Rob still stinks. KM--no need for you to come to Beta. Stay, Kevin. STAY! In fact, the whole Beta thing might go better for us if there were only a couple of teams this time around.

NMR !
last session my lineups were about to cross the airwaves when the results appeared. DOH I missed the deadline , but on the up side I won 2 games ,yipeee I should try this again : on the down side I missed valuable usage of CP/TP in 3 games a big loss.

Apparently we have some sort of shield in our possesion and our next opponents ""The Rats" will no doubt want to take that away from us .

We have to protect this at all costs , bring in the "BUS", "SHED", and anything else to protect our goal.

A+
The Alcoholics Anonymous of Dundrum Chapter finished the last session top of the Northern Conference after picking up 7 points from the 3 games. A 1-0 win vs the AA's former caretaker manager, was followed up with a 1-1 draw vs the River Rats. The next game vs the Odd Squad produced the biggest win in the session with a 2-0 victory, but somehow the orders for the match did not go through and the AA's own odd squad was sent out. Hopefully the final session will show whether I've mastered substitutions on the line-up creator and if my EL management is up to shape. So the first efforts were definitely A+ but could do better.

Hat-trick of Conference wins?
Somehow I would expect us to be in a stronger position at the top of the Southern Conference. A couple of good results and we'll have our third Conference win in as many seasons, but these won't be easy games. First up is ASM who are fighting for an Alpha spot, and a win keeps them in contention for the Cup. Then we have the unbeaten CUB.

The race of the playoffs looks like being one of the closest for a few seasons with 13 teams fighting for an Alpha spot and the worst of those 13 only 11 points behind us. There's going to be some disappointed managers on Wednesday.

SAT Press Release
Oh dear it has all gone horribly wrong. A lot of real life stuff has been happening so I was cursing myself for not making the time to write a blog entry and press release. That is a good source of income. I was however cursing myself even more when I read the match results and noticed I was playing all passive teams. Yep I got all mixed up with other league deadlines and had got it into my head that I had already made my FLATNZ orders. Needless to say all three matches were lost. When your team is built around the longball tactic and has no midfield going NMR is a certain loss as it plays a 4-4-2 formation (my crummy midfield cannot support the good attackers I have.)

So all that means that the mighty SAT who "sat" top of the Northern Conference go down to fifth place. If we don't pull off two excellent performances we will find ourselves in the BETA competition for the second season running. I told you all I suck at management and was going to kill this team! Thankfully the passive lineups from the last session mean we are in good shape EL wise. We need fit players as the last two matches are tough. Gibraltar have a history of doing well, but are struggling after going NMR whilst the KM team has a ton utility players. That gives them a lot of tactical options and makes me curse that the game doesn't have a limit on multi-position players.

A Word From The Rat

Ambivilent: feelings neither for nor against.  That's last session.  3 draws.  Myeh.  I guess that means we correctly judged the strength needed in each match so as not to lose any of them.  GM, AA & KM is a reasonably tough session.  Okay, GM doesn't look so tough right now, with Steven a bit distracted, but you can't tell that from the squad.  And AA went from 4th to 1st, so I'd say we did a reasonable job holding them to a draw.  As for KM, I'd be worried if it was a team of one-legged men on crutches as long as Kevin is coach.  Maybe we were too conservative.  Who knows.  At least we held position in 3rd spot, which is a pretty big deal in Northern this season.

Next up we meet the King of Stall, before taking on the resurgent OLY.  Holylanders struggled a bit last season, but they seem to have found their feet again.  Since they're right above us on the table, it might be a question of who wants 2nd most?  As they play top of the table AA before meeting us, we might have the advantage.  Depending on how grumpy Robin is feeling.  You don't want the Scottish Hitman feeling like death!

Well, i guess this was the first session without errors. We were lucky against SCO, who were leading 2:0 at a certain point of the game, but we scored 3 goals and won.yupeeeee. Next game was against MLB, who were resting, so we won comfortably, with two goals in the first 9 minutes. Well it looks like we cant beat ASM, we were again the better side but we lost at the end and this really jeopardizes our alpha participation. We have to win the next two games in order to go to alph, not an impossible task, but it will not be easy with a team that needs rest. Well we have the highest SL GK in the league, who performs like a junior. Hillary just doesnt play well, he let in 7 goals from 17 shots, thats not a good statistics. Well if he can find the right touch we are among the best teams in the league but now i dont know what to say.

Kingsridge Marauders
Kevin Martin
Better off without me
For what by the numbers is among the worst (if not the worst) team in the league, I should be happy walking away from last session with two draws and a one-goal loss for 5 points. Given the teams we faced, it could have been far worse. Against WRR especially we once again stole points due to luck. We figured we had so little chance of avoiding a loss that I decided to throw out something that Tim would never see coming. Hence the first ever foray of KM into the Finesse tactic! Coming away with a 0-0 draw, I may have to dip into that desperation bag of tactics more often...

Unfortunately, just as we start looking at the team and deciding that things are improving, I look around the tables at the other teams I've had a hand helping to round into shape. ASM (ghosting for half a season last year) is sitting in a very comfortable spot under Team Talsma and pulling some impressive upsets against the top clubs. AA (ghosted for the first four sessions this season) is now tops of the Northern table with just two matches to go! So if the teams I helped build up are doing so well, and the team I've had the most consistent hand on for the past two years is doing so poorly, the difference is?...

Yep. Current management. If all the other teams I've left behind have fared well this season, surely if I wandered away from KM then their fortunes would turn around under a new manager as well, right? Too bad I'm not planning on dropping KM anytime soon. Otherwise the fans might have something to look forward to this Beta campaign. Instead, 6th place seems like a reasonable goal to shoot for again. 4th will be out of reach unless we can pull off an MVP-caliber session (W-W-D or better) or two. What's really scary is that right now both SAT and DVV would be in Beta if the conference play ended today. That would not bode well for any chances of making the Bowl Playoffs. They definitely need to win both matches this session to go play in the big pond. At least SAT gets to start off by hosting KM. Nothing cures an NMR hangover quicker than a 5-point win at home. Think finesse can work twice in a row?
